A photographic diary featuring my latest images

Lakeside, Eastleigh

There have been reports of Snipe at Lakeside, so on a bitterly cold morning I went to take a look, but despite my best efforts if there were Snipe they remained elusive. I did however see and photograph a Green Woodpecker, Collared Dove, Great Crested Grebe, Song Thrush and a wintery Robin. I also saw a Redwing feasting on berries but was unable to get useable images.

Garden

The fat feed I made for the garden is appreciated, especially in this cold weather and I photographed a Jackdaw helping himself today. The female Great Spotted Woodpecker also revisited and I was able to get some shots. I am not terribly happy with them as the light was poor and the bird is backlit, I will try again on a sunnier day. Whilst waiting for the Woodpecker, the fat was visited by a group of Long Tailed Tits and a Coal Tit.

Bromwich Hampshire

Bromwich is on the Solent and surrounded by agricultural land and woodland, the variety of habitats makes it an excellent area for observing birds. The Solent provided me with the spectacle of approximately 400 Brent Geese, bobbing up and down on the sea and cackling loudly. A large Oak tree near farm buildings served as a perch for a beautiful Kestrel and the hedgerows all laden with winter fruits and berries attracted flocks of roaming Long Tailed Tits.

New Forest

I spent a very pleasant hour sat in the car in the New Forest today, I parked the car adjacent to a glade of trees and watched large numbers of Blue Tits, Chaffinches, and Great Tits, plus the odd Robin, Nuthatch and Coal Tit feed in the woodland.

Garden

Inspired by Autumn Watch, I decided to make my own fat feed for the birds. I put some on the bird table, hoping to attract Tits, Starlings and Robins, and the remainder I hung in the Cherry Tree with Great Spotted Woodpeckers in mind. It took less than an hour for the first Woodpecker to arrive, not bad bearing in mind I have only seen these birds in the garden on one previous occasion. So far the table top offering has attracted Blue Tits.
No photographs of the Woodpecker yet, but I did catch a Blue Tit on a peanut raid.

Hook with Warsash

The scrape at Warsash provides good entertainment especially if visited just before dusk as at this time numerous birds come in to roost. Although I only took a few photographs I watched, Teal, Pintails, Shovelers, Little Egrets, Herons, a Kestrel, Mute Swans, Brent Geese, Lapwings and Black tailed Godwit. The Brents pictured below flew in from their breeding grounds in Siberia in October and will depart again in March.
There were good numbers of Black Tailed Godwit.
These two Godwits were providing the entertainment for the Lapwings.

New Forest Hampshire

I returned to Eyeworth Pond in the New Forest and took some more photographs of the Mandarin, I was able to get a lot closer this time and I am happier with the results.
I was unable to resist this shot of the Mallards attempting synchronised dabbling.
